Feeling for Sound: Mapping Sonic Data to Haptic Perceptions
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents a system for exploring different dimensions of a sound through the use of haptic feedback. The Novint Falcon force feedback interface is used to scan through soundfiles as a subject moves their hand horizontally from left to right, and to relay information about volume, frequency content, envelopes, or potentially any analysable parameter back to the subject through forces acting on their hand. General practicalities of mapping sonic elements to physical forces are considered such as the problem of representing detailed data through vague physical sensation, approaches to applying forces to the hand that do not interfering with the smooth operation of the device, and the relative merits of discreet and continuous mappings. Three approaches to generating the force vector are discussed: 1) the use of simulated detents to identify areas of an audio parameter over a certain threshold, 2) applying friction proportional to the level of the audio parameter along the axis of movement, and 3) creating forces perpendicular to the subject’s hand movements. The potential uses of such a device are also discussed, such as ‘pre-feeling’ as a method for selecting material to play during a live performance, an aid for visually impaired audio engineers, and as a general augmentation of standard audio editing

Engraving-Hammering-Casting: Exploring the Sonic-Ergotic Medium for Live Musical Performance
Engraving–Hammering–Casting is a live music composition written for two performers, who interact with forcefeedback haptic interfaces. This paper describes the philosophy and development of the composition. A virtual physical model of vibrating resonators is designed and employed to generate both the sound and the haptic force feedback. Because the overall system, which includes the physical mo...
متن کاملSound Installation: Blurring the Boundaries of the Eye, the Ear, Space and Time
Sound installation interfaces musical and visual art through time and space. It is a sonic intermedia practice, which blurs the boundaries of the visual and aural and includes the spatial, the temporal and the haptic. Since 1977 I have been designing sound installations that merge the senses, offering unique experiences for the listener as participating auditor. In the discussion of several of ...
متن کاملA Voice Interface for Sound Generators: adaptive and automatic mapping of gestures to sound
Sound generators and synthesis engines expose a large set of parameters, allowing run-time timbre morphing and exploration of sonic space. However, control over these high-dimensional interfaces is constrained by the physical limitations of performers. In this paper we propose the exploitation of vocal gesture as an extension or alternative to traditional physical controllers. The approach uses...
متن کاملComments on Sonic Cannons
Three types of sonic cannons: Sonic cannons have had three incarnations over the years. The first implementation uses very low frequency sounds (essentially in the octave below the lower note on a piano keyboard) that have a significant vibro-tactile, or " whole body " response. This has been well studied in the literature and can result in nausea, a feeling of fullness in the chest and even he...
